Summer Season Review

Thursday, June 14, 2012

It’s right around the corner! The 2012 Summer Theatre Season opens in just a few short weeks, so if you don’t have your tickets yet…. well, what are you waiting for?! After a slightly more serious turn last year, music, love and laughter abound once again with this year’s fun, friendly line-up of 2 musicals and 2 plays. Here’s a quick summary of what we have to look forward to.

First up in the intimate Studio Two space is the fresh and contemporary musical The Last 5 Years. Starring audience favourites Jay Davis and Marisa McIntyre, The Last 5 Years chronicles a couple’s relationship from two unique perspectives: her story starts at the end & his begins on the day they met. It’s funny, honest, poignant, insightful, heartbreaking and just all around great theatre.

Meanwhile, the main stage in July is all about the boys! The boys of Forever Plaid, that is. This goofy musical revue starring Kraig Waye, Jon Alex MacFarlane, Rob Torr and Sweeney MacArthur is filled with the tight harmonies and nostalgic hits of days gone by and is sure to warm your heart on a starry summer’s night.

Norm Foster’s Storm Warning will keep our hearts in the past and the stars overhead as the studio is transformed into beautiful 1950’s Canadian cottage country this August. A sly, romantic comedy masquerading as serious theatre, Storm Warning stars Sweeney MacArthur as a damaged WWII vet and Erin Mackinnon as his amphetamine-popping, Big Band Chart writer neighbour. Polar opposite personalities collide and mayhem ensues.
Moving over to the main stage (and the ‘60s), Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park brings us more romance – of the quirky comedy variety. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds trying to begin their life together while dealing with an oddball neighbour, loopy mother-in-law and way too many stairs leading to their less-than-perfect apartment. Adjusting to married life won’t be easy but it sure is good for a laugh!

As in past seasons, audiences are invited to stay for the Post-Show Talk Back following each Wednesday performance and Saturday Socials (light receptions) following the first Saturday performance of each production.

Tickets for the Summer Theatre Season range from $27-$37 and are on sale now through the Rose Theatre Box Office. Visit http://www.rosetheatre.ca/ or call 905-874-2800 for more information.
