Modern Dance...Do You Like It?

When was the last time you attended a professional, contemporary ballet performance?

Maybe never? If that's the case, you’re not alone.  A lot of people never have the pleasure of experiencing modern dance and many assume they wouldn't like it anyway...

What I think we can sometimes forget though that we also don’t like every comedian, or every play or every band but we’re often willing to give a new act a try as long as they perform in a genre we feel is at least familiar and comfortable.

Contemporary dance is not so familiar, not so comfortable… and so sadly, it’s often sent to the corner of our minds where the “I don’t like it” demons live along with shall we say Wagnerian opera…yes, that is my own personal “don’t like” but I bet you have your own.

Now, I can admit it, when it comes to contemporary dance that maybe once you see it, you still might not “like it”.  But what if you give it a try only to discover that you are stirred by the beauty of the movement or what if you are surprised by the sheer physicality of the dancers?  And what if somehow still, you find you don’t technically “like it”, could it still have meaning for you?  Perhaps seeing a modern dance piece could be about allowing yourself to feel and to experience something new.  Could the art of dance provide you with an enviable gift of time to reflect or escape? Maybe it could just provide you with the space to step outside your day to day in this ridiculously busy world and perhaps discover a fresh perspective...

Aszure Barton & Artists will present an incredible new work on November 22.  Read more about the show in this month's edition of Odeum, now available on the blog.

Hope to see you at the theatre soon,

Genny
